The role

The Independent is looking for a Deputy Editor to join its award-winning Voices desk. The successful candidate will be a team player with an excellent and diverse contacts book, a passion for representing varied opinions on the biggest news stories of the day, and a good knowledge of all aspects of digital journalism including social media and SEO. You will act as deputy to two Voices Co-Editors, and will be expected to run the UK team in their absence.

The right candidate will have leadership experience and will feel comfortable managing a busy national desk with a demanding daily output. We are looking for someone who can work fairly and diplomatically with people who might hold opposing views to their own; who prides themselves on snappy headline-writing and excellent copy-editing; and who can engage new audiences in innovative ways

Key responsibilities

  • Supporting the editors as a member of a close-knit team delivering a diverse list of opinion pieces
  • Suggesting ideas for news-hooked articles each day, commissioning our world-class columnists and bringing in new writers
  • Deputising for the editors during absences and holidays including attending daily news conferences and other meetings to represent the desk when needed
  • Writing opinion pieces, bringing a distinctive style and new audience to the desk
  • Helping to organise speaking events, commission podcasts and direct video journalism

About you

  • At least three years’ experience working in comment journalism or news analysis for a mainstream newspaper or news website
  • Proven track record in building new audiences and introducing exciting writers to a digital space
  • Strong understanding of social media
  • Resilient and friendly in a busy newsroom with competing demands
  • Confident in working with high profile names in British journalism and reaching out to politicians and prominent public figures
  • Experience using a CMS
  • Excellent writer, with the ability to turn around an opinion piece at short notice
  • Happy to communicate across different desks and mindful of how an opinion story can collaborate with news, video, features and any other section
  • Good at timekeeping and used to work fast and with accuracy

Desirable

  • Experience of working on video journalism and/or podcasts, in addition to written journalism
  • Qualification or training in media law and ethics
  • Ability to use Trello, Slack, Chartbeat and other similar digital tools

Purpose of The Role

ESI Media are looking to recruit a Senior Technical Project Manager to work within the development team.

You will play an integral part in developing the next generation of digital experiences for all newspaper titles. You will report to the Head of Development / Chief Technology Officer and have exposure to the senior management team.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join an established national news media group with a fast-growing digital business. You will be working to deliver products that are at the heart of news consumption and a massive driver of growth for the group.

Responsibilities

  • Planning & scheduling for development team resource across multiple products & projects
  • Resource planning & allocation across the development team
  • Tracking of projects to determine if they are on schedule to previously communicated timelines
  • Proactive stakeholder management
  • Highlight potential risks in product delivery pipeline
  • Highlight potential conflicts in upcoming development work
  • Work with the development & product teams in getting high-level estimations for delivery of new features + functionality

Required Competencies

Experience Necessary

  • Previously worked in a start-up or small product & tech teams
  • Has 4+ years experience working in software product delivery
  • Has a digital background across websites and apps (design/development launch)
  • Has worked in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment
  • Has worked on news media websites and had previous exposure to different CMSs
  • Has experience working with 3rd party technology & outsourced partners

The Role

We are on the search for a smart & enthusiastic Manual Tester to join a dedicated team, to drive improvements in testing via manual testing

This role will give the Manual Tester full ownership of their work, where they will be tasked with designing, building and implementing best-fit test practices, to ensure that their high standards are kept throughout. Being part of the team following modern scrum practices, you will work closely with the QA Lead to ensure efficient test coverage and to drive quality delivery.

You will be working with a group of enthusiastic engineers who thrive on new technologies.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Strong Testing background with an excellent understanding of the Test Lifecycle and Testing Best Practices.
  • Experience of working within an agile environment.
  • Experienced in defining Quality Assurance deliverables producing quality Test artefacts.
  • Experience with Test planning and end to end testing.
  • Frontend Testing
  • API Testing experience
  • Experience in iOS and Android mobile app and web testing
  • CMS Testing experience
  • Database testing.
  • Have a proactive approach to your work and being very pragmatic.
  • Must be very analytical and be a problem solver

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Manual Testing (Test Planning, Test cases)
  • App testing
  • Media Company experience preferred
  • Postman.
  • Knowledge of Continuous Integration (Jenkins)
  • Drupal, MySql.
  • Certified to Foundation ISTQB level
