About us

ESI Media is an innovative multichannel media business, with a cross-platform reach of 27.5M readers – up 15% year on year. Our brands include The Evening Standard, The Independent and London Live. We have offices based in the UK and US and have expanded to editions in other languages.

The team

The Content and Syndication Teams are responsible for licensing ESI content and manage high revenue relationships with a range of publishers, digital partners and other content providers. The Independent has partnered with Saudi Research and Marketing Group (SRMG) in a joint venture and launched four Independent-branded sites in Arabic, Turkish, Urdu and Persian.

Job purpose

You will support the Content and Syndication Teams by reviewing content published by partners on English and non-English language websites. The role also involves assisting other team members in client support and may require weekend and out-of-hours working.

About you

  • Experienced translator from Persian /Farsi to English and vice versa
  • Ability to work accurately and present reports in a timely fashion
  • Organised, with a logical approach to managing tasks
  • Capacity to be clear and communicative
  • Proactive – can spot potential issues and address them before they become problems
  • Capability to learn quickly
  • Enthusiasm, flexibility, common sense and a natural curiosity are an advantage
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Key responsibilities and accountabilities

  • Monitor ESI content on partner sites
  • Log the content published on partner sites in Excel
  • Check the translated articles by comparing them with the source articles
  • Highlight any translation issues/errors and clearly report them to the Senior International Content Executive
  • Liaise with the Senior International Content Executive over errors and anomalies to maintain the quality of translation
  • Indicate any potential compliance issues to the Editorial team
  • Assist the team with other tasks as required

Skills and experience

  • Completely fluent in English, Persian. Additional languages such as Arabic, Turkish and Urdu will be a plus.
  • Exceptional attention to detail. Previous experience in proofreading/editing/reviewing is preferable.
  • Previous media/journalism experience with a keen editorial eye
  • Excellent research skills and ability to choose the right keywords to find relevant information
  • Ability to carry out repetitive tasks with accuracy
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Excellent analytical skills and experience of problem solving
  • Experience of presenting detailed data in a clear, succinct format, while highlighting the key points
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (particularly Excel)
  • Ability to multi-task and work efficiently in a busy environment with a noisy background
  • Experience of interaction with customers is a benefit
  • Confident but diplomatic in communicating errors to the Senior International Content Executive

The Role

The Independent is looking for an Environment Correspondent to deliver exclusive stories, breaking news, features and analysis.

Key responsibilities

  • Find, pitch and write exclusive stories that will lead The Independent website and Daily Edition app.
  • Produce quick and accurate breaking news stories
  • Write analysis, features and long reads on key developments on your beat
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key contacts
  • Suggest and write headlines to best promote stories on the website and social media
  • Choose pictures and videos to accompany stories

Skills and experience

  • At least two years’ experience working for a newspaper or news website
  • A proven track record of bringing in the kind of exclusive stories that will get the Independent noticed
  • Experience of writing under intense deadline pressure in a breaking news environment
  • Ability to run their own patch and develop contacts
  • Experience and / or enthusiasm for capturing video content while reporting
