The team

The Partnerships and Affiliate Team sits within the main ESI commercial team and is made up of commercial specialists tasked with growing performance revenue. Partnerships range anywhere from marketing financial products to generating holiday bookings. Our goal is to diversify revenue and secure successful long term profitable partnerships.

Main purpose of the role

To help grow B2B and B2C digital revenues through securing and implementing new partnership business, managing and optimisation of existing partnerships for independent.co.uk, standard.co.uk, indy100.com and homesandproperty.co.uk

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Sourcing and developing lucrative partnerships with relevant and suitable partners. These can range from tenancy to performance based agreements.
  • Play a key role in the optimisation of all new and existing partnerships to reach agreed revenue targets.
  • Liaise with online editors and collaborate with other editorial staff to ensure 3rd party content fits with the brand, tone and demographic profile of the websites
  • Based on agreed plan, implement and then manage the portfolio of commercial partnerships for independent.co.uk, standard.co.uk, indy100.com and homesandproperty.co.uk
  • Maximise revenue through continually refining existing partner strategy, initiatives and best practices.
  • Manage the portfolio on an on-going basis including:
  • Working with the commercial partners and relevant internal colleagues to maximise revenue for each partner.
  • Plan and help deliver the programme of in-paper and online promotions relating to partnerships (sourcing promotional images, copy, tracking where necessary) and marketing programmes to boost partnership revenue, working with Communications and CRM colleagues as appropriate.
  • Monthly review of available analytics data to ensure on-page optimisation of current partnerships and to aid sourcing of new partners.
  • Collating revenue figures for internal reporting and invoicing as appropriate.
  • Pro-actively manage partner placements on site, in paper and in email.
  • Deliver a quarterly summary of performance across all key metrics to inform future activity

Essential skills and experience

  • Previous successful management of a portfolio of commercial accounts and 3rd party content providers.
  • Experience of managing and developing commercial relationships
  • Experience in selling and understanding of commercial models, in particular tenancy and performance based (CPA, CPC etc.)
  • Previous experience in Marketing – in particular digital and direct response and/or communications
  • Collaboration skills to influence colleagues and prioritise commercial projects plans.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Excel for understanding/interpreting reports
  • Knowledge and understanding of measurement and tracking solutions

ESI Media is looking for a Commercial Operations Assistant who will support the Licensing and Syndication Team by managing sales administration, invoicing, accounts liaison and all commercial processes to support revenue generation.

You will be responsible for recording income and royalty reports. You will also support other team members by assisting in delivery of content feeds, recording content used by clients and occasionally updating ESI’s company Intranet.

The Licensing & Syndication Department

The L&S department is responsible for the sale and ongoing management of Independent and Evening Standard content when it appears on brands or platforms outside of those we own and directly control. That ranges from licensing articles to other news brands to TV screen use of our images to digital partnerships with large scale technology brands and off-platform publishing through social media channels.

Key responsibilities

  • Log income from clients in ESI’s sales booking system and liaise with Finance with client queries
  • Prepare weekly revenue and audience reports and revenue-tracking
  • Monitor and respond to in-bound sales enquiries using reply / pricing templates
  • Communicate price, usage quotes and where relevant, negotiate with clients to support sales of text, images and video content
  • Manage pricing agreements or contract administration for the Account Manager or Head of Content Partnerships
  • Monitor off-platform content usage on third-party platforms (MSN, Yahoo, Facebook, Apple etc)
  • Report ESI editorial content used by clients; clearly communicate results and anomalies to the relevant manager
  • Assist on updating / refreshing content on the company Intranet across all ESI brands
  • Support special projects for the Sales and Library teams to support departmental goals

About you

You will feel confident pitching, presenting and responding to briefs, all with a consultative approach. Technical understanding is certainly a plus but more important is a willingness and ability to learn.

You will report to the Digital Agency Group Head, work closely with the immediate team, the Cross Media Solutions and Ad Ops teams and spend the majority of your time finding opportunities to maximise revenues across the ESI network.

You will already have a demonstrable track record in direct or programmatic sales as well as an ability to build new relationships. You will understand the different ways in which the modern planner/buyer wants to interact. Experience of selling and managing agency direct or programmatic relationships and campaigns are essential.

The Digital Agency Sales Team

The Digital Agency Sales Team will be representing ESI Media across the whole agency including the trading desks, digital and planning teams. The objective is to maximise digital display revenues via direct and programmatic channels. Members of this team are the first point of call for ESI Media’s digital business and the agency.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities

  • Propose, pitch and close business for existing clients, manage pipelines, maintain knowledge of market activity.
  • Build strong relationships with agency digital planning, buying and trading teams at relevant levels through regular communication, meetings and entertainment as appropriate.
  • Establish new business through structured pitches and pipeline management to dormant clients within agency/buyer portfolio.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of designated agencies and clients, their strategies and approaches.
  • Work closely with the Ops team to ensure the full delivery and optimisation of campaigns.
  • Analyse data and accumulate insights on campaign performance and market intelligence.
  • Input into our programmatic trading strategy and help enhance our offering whilst protecting our direct customer base.
  • Be aware of relevant developments in the digital industry and to ensure sales teams are kept abreast of all new opportunities as well as competitor activity.
  • Perform all other reasonable duties as requested by the Digital Group Head and Sales Director, programmatic and direct and adhere to all company and departmental principles and guidelines.

Skills and Experience

  • Agency direct or programmatic sales experience; ideally with a publisher, ad network, ad tech or agency.
  • Strong contacts within programmatic and direct digital buyers across the major agency groups.
  • Excellent, proven ability to sell programmatic solutions.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and presentation skills.
  • An understanding of how programmatic trading works – trading, analytics, site specific sales, networks, research, technical terms, etc.
  • Professional, diligent, proactive and a good team player.
  • Enthusiasm for working in the media industry and an aspiration to grow and develop in digital sales.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of developments across the media industry.

The Evening Standard Audio Team

The audio team is an exciting new development within the Evening Standard, working with global partners to produce innovative, short-form, audio news for multiple-platform delivery, such as smart speakers.

About you

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a broadcast or digital newsroom
  • Ability to spot a great story
  • Exceptional writing skills
  • Great broadcast voice
  • Highly creative, with a problem-solving attitude and willingness to embrace new methods of working
  • Proficient and speedy with audio editing software (Adobe Audition)
  • Experience in digital distribution (eg podcasting or smart speakers)

  • Willingness to work a shift pattern, including at weekends, early/late or unsociable hours

Job purpose

You will be joining a new team of three journalists being created in one of the UK’s most trusted newspapers, in one of the most innovative and exciting areas of news distribution. The Evening Standard is working in partnership with Google and others to develop news content for smart speakers such as Google Assistant.

You will be writing, editing and recording both short-form breaking news items and longer form, documentary-style packages for international audiences, with a particular focus on the US. This is not a podcast producing role.

Key responsibilities

  • Writing and voicing short-form news stories and longer packages for digital platforms
  • Editing news clips and third party audio in response to the daily news agenda
  • Securing, recording and editing relevant interviews for stories
  • Generating & pitching ideas for news stories and packages
  • Keep across major UK, US and international developments
  • Monitoring and responding to analytics to ensure optimised content

Key responsibilities

  • Experience working in a fast-paced newsroom with proven ability to deliver to pressing deadlines and remain calm under pressure
  • Working understanding of UK media law as pertains to content creation and publishing
  • Research skills - identifying newsworthy stories, finding compelling contributors and coming up with regular ideas
  • Provable use of online research tools and social media search functions
  • Strong communication skills, including ability to pitch stories
  • Experience writing audio scripts for different kinds of news and current affairs audiences
  • Familiarity with news wires and clipping services
  • Experience with Content Management Systems, and an understanding of metadata
  • Understanding of best practices in content production for multi-platform distribution

The Role

The Independent is looking for an Environment Correspondent to deliver exclusive stories, breaking news, features and analysis.

Key responsibilities

  • Find, pitch and write exclusive stories that will lead The Independent website and Daily Edition app.
  • Produce quick and accurate breaking news stories
  • Write analysis, features and long reads on key developments on your beat
