The Role

We are looking for a Data Scientist to be responsible for designing, maintaining, and enhancing complex online advertising models and forecasts through the use of relevant tools to produce various datasets that could be used to optimise advertising monetisation setups.

This role will provide support mainly to the AdOps data team to build forecasting datasets, cluster analysis, pattern identification, and behavioural models, with a main (but in no way exclusive) focus on the Evening Standard brand. This role is perfect for someone who has a strong mathematical background and has previous experience (2-3 years) working in a data science role, looking to take the next step in their data science career and to explore the thriving media industry.

The Operations Team

The operations team consists of four main parts: Campaign Management, Programmatic Operations, Data and Ad Technology. You will be working with the data team and have a focus on modelling and forecasting. The operations team has grown from 2 to 16+ members with in the span of the last 3 years.

Key Responsibilities

  • Rapidly develop proficient working knowledge of all platforms used within the AdOps data team
  • Design, develop and maintain models and forecasts to allow the optimal and efficient allocation of digital advertising inventory
  • Design and develop algorithms for the automatic classification of products/placements/behaviours and opportunities
  • Use data analysis to facilitate revenue growth
  • Find new ways to look into data that can produce valuable insights
  • Ensure that required reporting is done in an accurate and timely manner to ensure complete and accurate revenue recognition
  • Identify inefficiencies in our processes and contribute towards their amendment with compelling analysis

  • Extensive experience in a paid data science role – MUST
  • Advanced Python skills
  • Solid knowledge of SQL across a number of platforms including cloud e.g. BigQuery
  • Experienced with cloud-based data pipeline processing solutions (GCP or AWS)
  • Demonstrable working knowledge of ML techniques: classification and regression trees, SVMs, Linear programs, Integer programs
  • Grasp of statistical significance, confidence intervals, sampling

Job purpose

Working in a fast-paced commercial environment, the successful candidate will be responsible for developing and owning the sponsorship and partnerships strategy and ensure that it meets all its financial targets and all aspects of commercial development and sponsorship across the business.

Key responsibilities

  • Work with the Head of Events and members of the LIVE team to develop ideas for revenue streams and approaches for growth
  • Drive event sponsorship revenue through proactive sales initiatives and answering briefs
  • Ensure sales targets are achieved/exceeded
  • Detailed and focused on pipeline of activities, closing business and converting ideas and briefs
  • Translate marketing strategies/plans into event sponsorship benefits
  • Develop and grow the existing client base and spend
  • Actively and intelligently seek and target new business opportunities
  • Achieve and maintain high sales activity and results, providing accurate reporting and forecasts
  • To be key in creating a culture of creativity and innovation – through internal initiatives, the sharing of great work, and driving sales process excellence
  • Maintain, develop and manage the sales database including recording of key contacts and communications
  • Contribute ideas to develop events by regularly reviewing industry press and exploit knowledge to spot new opportunities
  • Develop and maintain productive client and agency relationships ensuring a high level of customer service and focus at all times
  • Ensure exceptional value for sponsors across all activities and champion high-quality account management across the team
  • Passionate in pushing innovation & creative brand solutions within the live experience sector
  • Demonstrate clear understanding of the Evening Standard audiences, their challenges, passions and how to engage with the them through live experiences

Skills and experience

  • Passionate about live experiences and complete belief in the power of live experiences.
  • Knowledgeable and experienced in live / hybrid / virtual event sales
  • Evidence of robust sales processes including finding & qualifying prospects, need analysis, building urgency, client collaboration, proposal writing and closing techniques
  • A consistent record in driving and developing event sponsorship strategies to attract and retain sponsors
  • Commercial flair with ability to spot and capitalise on profitable opportunities
  • Experience negotiating complex multi-channel event sponsorships and partnerships
  • Strong influencer and negotiator who is skilled in winning new business
  • The gravitas required to get buy-in at the most senior level
  • Excellent and engaging written, oral, video and in-person communication skills
  • Exceptional account management and client liaison skills
  • Strong interpersonal, influencing skills, flair, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit
  • Tenacious, determined and realistic
  • A strong understanding of the market, competing events and the engagement of brands already committed to similar events
  • An extraordinary “little black book” of active contacts
  • The practical actions required to be able to fulfil the role’s requirements

About you

You are an excellent communicator with a strong editorial / content and journalism background, with senior leadership experience, great commercial acumen and the ability to deliver under pressure.

Highly organised, culturally astute and a great people manager with excellent attention to detail and an understanding of journalism law.

You are full of innovative commercial and editorial ideas, have a phenomenal black book of contacts and collaborators in fashion, the arts and photography.

Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience of editing and title.
  • Experience of sub-editing and proofreading both print and online content
  • Experienced at planning, commissioning and editing content
  • Managing a production process on deadline and on budget
  • Able to deliver high-quality content to an outside brief
  • Commercial experiences working with clients
  • Experience working in a dynamic and fast-moving environment, a quick, accurate and confident writer.
  • Able to work with external freelancers and contributors

Role purpose

This is a high profile leadership position in the ESI stable. The ES Editor is a key brand ambassador for the company and must be able to deliver an exciting vision and lead a creative team. As well as being a skilled editorial executive, they will have a strong business sense, great brand contacts and be able to operate their own P and L. They should be an innovator across print and digital.
