The role

The Independent is looking for a talented journalist to become the title’s first Race Correspondent, reporting widely on issues that affect the lives of people of colour and exposing stories of racial injustice.

The successful candidate will be an experienced reporter with a track record of delivering exclusives, who wants the time and space to focus on stories that will have real impact. These are likely to come from across politics and social policy, but also include human features, interviews, investigations and data-led pieces.

You will be supported by senior editors who are committed to improving The Independent’s coverage of racial issues. The role will be predominantly focused on stories in the UK, but there will be opportunities for reporting on wider international issues.

  • At least two years experience as a journalist with a track record of delivering original stories

The Independent Creative Solutions Team

Tasked with representing the Independent across client, partnership and planning teams. The objective is to maximise digital revenues via all non-display formats. Members of this team are the first point of call for the Independent’s creative solutions and partnerships.

About you

Job purpose

An experienced sales leader, you will be responsible for shaping the Creative Solutions strategy for the Independent’s sales team. With deep knowledge and experience of sponsorship, branded content and creative production and delivery.

The candidate will have an array of senior agency contacts, profile in the market plus a strong handle on how the fast changing digital environment is evolving are pre-requisite for this role. Experience of managing solutions sales and delivery teams is pre-requisite.


Key responsibilities and accountabilities - what is delivered

  • Create & implement a new Branded Content strategy, in addition to managing the solutions sales and delivery teams
  • Create new content partnerships through a combination of using our own internal creative resources in addition to building a roster of best in class partner providers.
  • Develop core branded content pricing structure, products and analytics suite for in depth metrics around performance.
  • Drive the team to be the best in class for ideation.
  • Represent the Independent at events, industry panels and conferences to ensure that our fame and ideas standout across our content deliverables.
  • Secure and develop the best in market relationships with our top clients and content agency team
  • Be the conduit between Commercial & Editorial to drive genuine collaboration and efficiencies across all projects
  • Revenue accountability for the Independent’s creative solutions, sponsorship and branded content revenues.
  • Member of the Independent’s commercial senior leadership team

  • Proven leader with the ability to motivate and galvanise a large team of salespeople.
  • Senior agency nous and relationships – to drive exponential revenue growth and maximise non display revenue growth.

About the team

The Partnerships and Affiliate Team sits within the main commercial team and is made up of commercial specialists tasked with growing performance revenue. Affiliates and partnerships range anywhere from marketing financial products to generating holiday bookings or sales from product recommendations. Our goal is to diversify revenue and secure successful long term profitable partnerships.

Main purpose of the role

To help grow B2B and B2C digital revenues through securing and implementing new affiliate business and the managing and optimisation of existing affiliate partnerships across independent.co.uk.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Work alongside the other members of the team to source and develop new lucrative affiliate partnerships. These can range from tenancy to performance based CPA agreements.
  • Maintain a good profile within the major affiliate networks and agencies.
  • Liaise with online editors to ensure content fits with the overall commercial strategy.
  • Play a key role in reaching team revenue targets by refining the current strategy, helping generate new affiliate partnerships, and optimising the existing ones.
  • Help maintain financial forecasting and billing for the Affiliate area.
  • Collate revenue figures for internal reporting and invoicing as appropriate.
  • Support the other members of the team in managing the affiliate business on an on-going basis including:

o Working with the commercial partners and relevant internal colleagues to maximise revenue for each partner.

o Deliver a monthly summary of performance across all key metrics and analyse the data collected to inform future activity.

o Liaise with the other members of the team to closely monitor our articles, ensure out of stock is kept to a minimum, and content is optimised for revenue and traffic.

o Liaise with clients and AMs and partner with internal Ad Operation, CRM and Editorial Teams to prepare and execute campaigns and measure and report on their effectiveness.

o Communicate with the editorial teams on a daily basis to ensure continuous commercial support

o Implement best practice processes for all aspects of the affiliate channel including invoicing, tracking, reporting, and communication.

Essential skills and experience

  • Experience in driving revenue through optimisation and achieving CPA increases where possible.
  • Experience of managing and developing commercial relationships - publisher, agency or affiliate network side preferable.
  • Understanding of commercial models, in particular tenancy and performance based (CPA, CPC etc.).
  • Previous experience in Marketing – in particular digital and direct response and/or communications.
  • Collaboration skills to influence colleagues and prioritise commercial projects plans.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Excel for understanding/interpreting reports.
  • Knowledge and understanding of measurement and tracking solutions.
  • Working in a challenging and fast paced environment.

Job purpose

ESI Media is looking for a Commercial Operations Assistant who will support the Licensing and Syndication Team by managing sales administration, invoicing, accounts liaison and all commercial processes to support revenue generation.

You will be responsible for recording income and royalty reports. You will also support other team members by assisting in delivery of content feeds, recording content used by clients and occasionally updating ESI’s company Intranet.

The Licensing & Syndication Department

The L&S department is responsible for the sale and ongoing management of Independent and Evening Standard content when it appears on brands or platforms outside of those we own and directly control. That ranges from licensing articles to other news brands to TV screen use of our images to digital partnerships with large scale technology brands and off-platform publishing through social media channels.

Key responsibilities

  • Log income from clients in ESI’s sales booking system and liaise with Finance with client queries
  • Prepare weekly revenue and audience reports and revenue-tracking
  • Monitor and respond to in-bound sales enquiries using reply / pricing templates
  • Communicate price, usage quotes and where relevant, negotiate with clients to support sales of text, images and video content
  • Manage pricing agreements or contract administration for the Account Manager or Head of Content Partnerships
  • Monitor off-platform content usage on third-party platforms (MSN, Yahoo, Facebook, Apple etc)
  • Report ESI editorial content used by clients; clearly communicate results and anomalies to the relevant manager
  • Assist on updating / refreshing content on the company Intranet across all ESI brands
  • Support special projects for the Sales and Library teams to support departmental goals

Skills and experience
